The search functionality in Outlook 2007 / 2010 sometimes does not work properly. Usually all you need to do to fix the problem is to rebuild the search index.

Q: How to rebuild the search indexes?

A: You have to access the Indexing Options screen.

Instructions for users of Windows Vista / Windows Seven:
1. Click the Windows Start button and type “index” in the Search field.
2. Click Indexing Options that appear under programs.
3. Click the Advanced button on the Indexing Options screen.
4. Click the Rebuild button.

This process ensures that your current Search Index is deleted and rebuilt. It takes a long time, so you can activate it when going somewhere out or to sleep. ;)

We refer here to the situation when you get an invitation to view a shared Outlook folder (share Outlook folders). It has been sent from MS Office Outlook 2007/2010 user who is connected to Exchange Server. The problem is that you cannot access the shared folder as you do not have such an option in the received message.

Q: Why can’t I access shared folder that I’ve been invited to view?
A: Probably the invitation’s sender is running a later version of Outlook than you do, e.g. Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010, while you are still using Outlook 2003.

Sometimes, trying to open links received in e-mails we get the message:”This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”.

Q: Why do I encounter hyperlink restrictions in Outlook 2007?

A: The most common cause is a corrupted or missing registry key in Internet Explorer.

Q: How can I resolve this issue?

A:Start with resetting web settings of your Internet Explorer (find instructions below appropriate for your browser’s version). It this will not help, you will have to import the registry key from another PC.

How to reset IE web settings?

IE 9
Open Internet Explorer > Click the Tools icon > click Internet Options > Click the Advanced tab > click Reset > Programs tab > click Set programs > Click Set your default programs > Select Microsoft Outlook > click Set this program as default > OK > close the Default Programs dialog box > Go to the Internet Options dialog box > click the Programs tab > click Make default under Default web browser > OK.

IE 7 / IE8
Open Internet Explorer > On the Tools menu, click Internet Options >Click the Advanced tab > click Reset > Programs tab > click Set programs > Click Set Default Programs > Select Microsoft Outlook > click Set this program as default > OK > close the Default Programs dialog box > In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Programs tab > click Make default under Default web browser > OK.

IE 6
Come on, do not say that you use such an outdated browser (?!). Upgrade it for your own safety…

If this method do not resolve the problem, export and import the registry key from another computer. You need to follow the below steps carefully as you are about to modify the registry. Just in case, do a backup of the registry before you edit it, so if a problem occurs, you can always restore it.

1. Export the registry key from another computer:

Start > Run > In the Open box, type regedit > click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command >Click the Command folder.
On the File or Registry menu (depending on your operating system), click Export > Note the location of where the file will be saved. > Type a unique file name > click Save >Exit Registry Editor.

2. Import the registry key

Copy the exported registry key to the desktop on the problem computer.
Double-click the .reg file.

3. You receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to add the information in drive: location file was copied to\file name.reg to the registry?
Click Yes > click OK.

4. Verify if the String (Default) value of the “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html” key is “htmlfile”:

Start > click Run > In the Open box, type regedit > click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \.html > Verify if the value of the String (Default) is “htmlfile”. If it’s not “htmlfile”, right-click (Default), click Modify, input htmlfile in the Value data box > click OK > Exit Registry Editor.
